Knowing why you are building what you are building, and where you want to go, is really important.
Introduction
Setting direction is one of the most important things you will do when building. A clear direction aligns everyone to work towards the same objectives. A vision statement, mission statement, and an objective hierarchy can all be useful to getting there. Without direction, it will be harder to work together, know what to prioritize, and create momentum and velocity.

This is not a per team or per product thing. Even though that is the norm today, this often results in varying versions of reality and a splintered strategy with competing priorities
Mission
Once the vision is fixed, the mission is the part of it this institution will actually carry. Not the whole future. Its role.
That role comes from heritage. Two institutions can want the same world and still have different missions, because they were built by different people, in different places, for different work. A mission that could be lifted onto a competitor without anyone noticing is not a mission. It is a category.
Write it so a stranger could tell what you will do, and what you will leave to someone else. A mission with no edge is a wish that the whole organization is the hero of.
Objectives
An Objective is a goal with a clearly defined end state. It has a measurable outcome and output.
They should have clear start and end dates, a clear scope of what is within and outisde. A clear priority and should be aligned with both your vision and mission. They need to have measurable metrics for quantitative output and qualitative outcomes of completing the objective.
